Last week marked a very special week for us as a little family of 3. Not only did I finish my job as a teacher to become a stay at home mummy (for the time being) but we also celebrated a huge milestone: Little One's first birthday! Ok, so your baby's first birthday is definitely not an ordinary moment; far from it. In fact, it felt like a huge deal to us and we couldn't quite believe how quickly his first year has gone.
As you know, babies can be pretty unpredictable so we didn't want to make any grandiose plans for his birthday. We just wanted to do something simple. A little family outing with just the three of us. We woke up on his birthday and the sun was shining. It was another gorgeously sunny day so we decided to pack up the car, make a little picnic and head out. We didn't even plan where we were going, all we knew was that we wanted to push him around on his new Smart Trike and enjoy a picnic together in the sun.
In the end, we settled for Bolton Abbey near Skipton in North Yorkshire. How I have never been there before still baffles me. It's simply beautiful. The only expense of the day was the hefty £8.00 car park fee and a couple of cheeky ice creams. Little One loved being pushed around the ancient ruins and along past the river on his new trike. He enjoyed a lovely birthday picnic, sitting under the shade of the trees and watching the cows basque in the sun by the river. We let him have a little crawl about and then we set off home for a bit of cake and some presents. I was so happy that he'd had such a nice first birthday. I even had a little tear when we sang happy birthday as he blew out his birthday candle.
All in all, a lovely birthday which was made wonderful through its simplicity, through us just doing something quite ordinary. It makes me wonder whether the best days are the ones which are the most spontaneous...
