At 10 months old, L is very much in the middle of a very lengthy and drawn out spell of teething, and as we know, with teething comes extra dribble, those nasty teething nappies and occasionally, nappy rash too. I know some babies are fortunate not to suffer with nappy rash but actually, up to a third of babies and toddlers in nappies have nappy rash at any one time, and Little L is most definitely in that third of babies at the moment. No matter how many times I change his nappy, he still gets a bit of nappy rash, so for me it's really important to keep his bottom protected and happy.
Little L now has four top teeth and two bottom teeth, with another two teeth on the way. Cue more dribble and nappy rash. I was really pleased therefore when the lovely people at Bepanthen got in touch to ask if we'd like to try out their Nappy Care Ointment. They very kindly sent a gorgeous box of lovely treats and two tubes of their award winning Nappy Care Ointment.
What is nappy rash?
Nappy rash is an inflammation of the baby's skin caused by prolonged contact with a damp nappy and there are a number of causes:
- Baby's skin being in contact with wee and poo for a long time
- Nappy rubbing against baby's skin
- Not cleaning the nappy area often or thoroughly enough
- Soaps and bubble bath
- Alcohol-based baby wipes
- Baby taking anti-biotics
I was really keen to try out the ointment and see the effect it had on Little L's red nappy rash. The ointment forms a breathable, transparent layer to protect babies' delicate skin from the damp conditions of a wet nappy. The cream didn't feel heavy or pasty and was light and silky to apply to the skin- it contains pro-vitamin B5 which aids the natural recovery of babies' skin and indeed, it did feel like a moisturiser on L's skin. I put the cream on his bottom last night as it was looking a little red and by this morning, his skin was back to it's normal condition, so the ointment obviously worked it's magic overnight.
I think that because Little L seems quite susceptible to mild nappy rash, I need to use the ointment more frequently to protect the skin- after all, prevention is better than cure. Although it's reassuring to know that Bepanthen Nappy Care Ointment doesn't contain any hidden nasties- perfumes, antiseptics or preservatives so I can use it at every nappy change, and with the new easy to use flip top lid, it's much easier to apply one handed. I'll definitely be keeping a big tube to hand on our change table and I can pop the smaller, more handy 50g tube in our change bag.
