Updating My Wardrobe for Summer

When it comes to fashion I would say I feel generally more comfortable in winter wear. I'm not sure why, but in general I just find it easier to work out what to wear in the colder months, chucking on jeans and a jumper or a dress with tights. In the summer months, I find it a lot harder to work out what to wear day by day. Aside from the oh so changeable weather, it takes me a lot of confidence to wear certain more summery things, and as such, I tend not to take many risks when it comes to summer fashion. I'd describe my day-to-day style as uber casual and tend to stick to either jeans, a t-shirt (usually stripes!) and comfy pumps or trainers and denim shorts and a t-shirt for those warmer days.

I recently posted a photo on Instagram and talked about my relationship with fashion. I've never been a slave to particular trends, preferring instead to stick to things I feel comfortable in or that I feel suit me. I feel that even though I've changed shape and have suffered from Diasatsis Recti (a split in my abdominals which has left me feeling very self conscious about my stomach), I'm actually more confident as a person now aged 32 than I ever was in my teens or twenties. Therefore I've said I'd love to try and be a little more adventurous when it comes to summer fashion, rather than reaching for the shorts, jeans and t-shirts as my daily go-to outfits.

Fashionworld.co.uk recently got in touch to ask if I'd like to pick out a few pieces to try from their summer collection. Although the website advertises as 'plus size', there is a full range of sizes available in different styles, from size 8 to size 34. I found it easiest to find styles for my shape and size by using the filter option.

The first item I chose was this beautiful striped maxi skirt by Monsoon. I feels really good quality and is really comfortable to wear, particularly on those warmer days and find it's a really nice alternative if you don't fancy wearing shorts. I got this in a size 10 and it did come up a little on the big side for me, and as it has a half elasticated waist band, I'd probably get away with a slightly smaller size.

Playsuits are another really easy option for summer wear, and previously was something I'd only ever really worn on holidays. I found this white striped bardot playsuit and thought it would be perfect for either a holiday or for wearing about the garden. I love the simplicity of the stripes and the tassel detail, and paired with a nice pair of sandals, I think this is a really simple and comfy style for summer. There are lots of other different other styles available too.

Finally, of course I needed to get a swimsuit. I'm still working hard to fix my Diastasis Recti in my abs, so don't feel comfortable to wear a bikini yet, so I'm always really pleased when I find a beautiful colourful swimsuit or tankini. I absolutely love the colours and pattern on this swimsuit, it looks really vibrant for summer. The sizing is a little more generous than I was expecting, particularly in the chest, but I do often have this problem when it comes to sculpted swimwear!

I'm really pleased that I've started to build a bit of confidence to step out of my comfort zone a little more with summer clothing. I think sometimes all it takes is to try a few different styles to see what suits you, be a little more daring with colours and see if you're comfortable! And as for waiting for special occasions to wear skirts and dresses, I now realise that I can wear these things day to day, for the school run or just to pop to the shops, because, well, why not?! You've got to make the most of the sunny days while you can!

Thank you to Fashion World for gifting me these items. All photos and words are my own.
